Walk #1 – The Hidden History of Sheffield’s Football Heritage
Starting on West Bar at the site of the Surrey Theatre, owned by Thomas Youdan who was the instigator of the Youdan Football Cup (Guinness Book of Records recognised World’s first ever knockout football tournament). We then take a stroll through Campo Lane, East Parade, Norfolk Row, Tudor Square, Surrey Street, Howard Street, and Arundell Street. Finishing at Butcher Works on Arundell Street.
You Will Discover
During the walk you will visit and hear the stories about the locations where:
- the first ever knockout football tournament in the World came from;
- the 1st ever Rules of Football for the modern game were written;
- the 1st football club to play to those rules was formed;
- the winning team captain of the first ever knockout tournament lived;
- the Wednesday FC was formed;
- Sheffield United FC was formed;
- Yorkshire County Cricket Club was formed;
- the lease for Bramall Lane Cricket Ground was agreed;
- the first factory/works team and their unlikely run in the FA Cup.
We also pass and talk about places associated with the origins of 1st ever Catholic football teams in the world; the 1st team in the world to be formed by a public house; the 1st factory/works team; the 1st FA Cup game decided by a coin-toss; the origination of Sheffield Women’s involvement in football; the origins of the game for the ‘common people’ and the embryos of the ‘professional game’; plus several important personalities who helped establish Sheffield as the ‘CRUCIBLE’ of modern association football, not only in England but across the World.
