Walk #4 – Penistone Football Trail – S36

Starting at Penistone Church FC’s ground and then walking around the small town of Penistone, you get a greater understanding of Penistone’s remarkable role in the early development of football [controversially pre-Sheffield FC] and how this helped shape the football that developed in Sheffield and became the game we know today.

You Will Discover

During the walk you will visit and hear the stories about the locations and people that took the seeds of a more progressing game of football and scattered these around Sheffield and beyond.

We will visit:

• Green House and it’s playing fields

• Horns Tavern and the early betting saga

• Cockpit Lane and the regular kick-abouts

• Grammar School and the inspirational Headmaster

• John’s to find the grave of a legend

• Pennine Trail to get to Thurlstone

• Hornthwaite Ground and the Crystal Palace

You will hear a lot about:

• The Dransfield family, especially John Ness Dransfield

• The Marsh family, especially John Marsh

• The clergy and masters of the Grammar School, especially Rev. Samuel Sunderland

• The driving force behind John Charles Shaw, associated with Sheffield FC, Hallam FC, Youdan Cup, Sheffield FA, and the FA.

Along the way we will pass and talk about places and events that demonstrate the special contribution that the people of Penistone have made to football.

Our Guides will be with you throughout sharing the information and answering any questions you may have, and don’t forget we offer ‘EXTRA TIME’ which is optional but for this walk we strongly recommend you schedule the time in. It allows us to get out to Thurlstone without ‘dashing down the Pennine Way’ and share a lot more (it’s just extra time not extra money!.
