A I’m Following Sheffield United(Interrupted by)Bobby Knutt
B A Different Sort Of Me

A merry ditty extolling SUFC, recorded by Alan Martin, who did a lot of work for Radio Hallam and locally to Sheffield. He had links to Sarnia Records who were a very small independent label who were based in Cheshire and Guernsey. One of the few “novelty” records associated with Sheffield United. Here’s a scratchy recording!

Bobby Knutt (real name Robert Andrew Wass) was born in 1945 and brought up in Summerfield Street and went to Pomona Street County School, after passing the 11 plus exam he went to Nether Edge School. After attending there for a year, all the pupils went to the newly opened Abbeydale Grammer School for Boys in Millhouses. He was originally from off Deerlands Avenue, Parsons Cross. He did some of his very early practices with the “4 Blades” band at Shiregreen Church hall on Valentine Crescent, Shiregreen.

Here are some memories from forum users.

“When I was a kid, I worked at a holiday camp and Alan Martin was the Ted Bovis style compere. He was from the Manchester area and told me that he had pitched versions of the song to Oldham Athletic and Manchester City. One night he was working a club with Bobby Knutt and they decided to record it because the Sheffield United had the right number of syllables for the chorus.” (PandaCola)

“Around 15/20 years ago I was talking to Knutt in a club in South Elmsall about the record, I asked him if he could get me a copy? he laughed and said “that tin-pot record company wouldn’t even let me have a freebie”. Think it’s a great nostalgic reference of when clubs started bringing out club records like Leeds, Man U, Spurs, Chelsea etc.” (Lawrence)

It’s also included on a double album of football songs called Flair 1989, which has a young Nigel Clough on the cover and TC on the back.
