Members of the Shri Guru Gobind Singh Sikh Ji Temple in Sheffield, have given out £33,000 for local and international charities, raised from a football competition held at Bramall Lane last year. The temple now has three football teams at different levels called the Punjab Kings, which play every week at the Goodwin Sports Centre.
The group held a cheque presentation event on Sunday (2nd February) at which charity representatives were invited to share a community meal at the Sikh temple on Warren Street in Attercliffe. ‘We’ve been running the teams for around two and half years and this event was to celebrate our success and to demonstrate inclusivity, equality and our commitment to the wider community of Sheffield’, said organiser and player Gurminder Khaira.
‘The most rewarding part of running the football teams is seeing young people from not just the Sikh community, but from all backgrounds, come together in football and do some good in the community’ Two of the local charities which benefitted from the fundraising were Weston Park Cancer Charity and Sheffield Home of Football.
