On Friday 13th March 2026, Sheffield Home of Football will be revealing our first football artwork to be unveiled by Mayor Oliver Coppard of the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority
‘The artwork designed by David Westby (a Sheffield born artist) and created by local craftsmen across the the city, is a tribute to David’s brother, Martin Westby, a respected football historian who sadly is no longer with us’ says John Clarke, Chief Executive of Sheffield Home of Football, the charity behind the project.
The artwork (Heads or Tail’s) is highly symbolic, telling the tale of the only FA cup match won on the toss of a coin and won by Sheffield FC in Oct 1873. The date on the coin and the story behind it hides a deeper story of our city’s struggle with the economic and natural disasters of that year and how, we as a city, came through them. We’re looking forward to this landmark unveiling and we have plans for other public art to celebrate our unique football culture in Sheffield. It’s a chance to see Sheffield’s newest visual attraction in all its glory.
We encourage guests to arrive from 10:30 am. The location is central, so public transport is recommended, although there is parking nearby. We believe that the very first football culture and the sport which is now followed by over 5 billion people, evolved in Sheffield and has the capacity to produce art, music, dance, literature and great sculpture.
