Football Walks

Football fans can learn more about the origins of the modern game in a new series of guided football walks around Sheffield city centre. The walks have been designed (and will be led) by two of the charity’s trustees and historians, local author John Stocks and documentary maker Steve Wood  with the help of a new team of volunteers.  Steve is the creator of the ‘Real History of Football’ and ‘First City of Football’ video series and is an experienced Sheffield Cathedral tour guide and fellow trustee John Stocks is an author who also runs the ‘Little Chicago Quarter’ walks in the city.

“Its a fascinating 90 minute guided stroll around iconic buildings in Sheffield City Centre, as we explore the remarkable story of Sheffield, the crucible of the modern game of football”, says John Stocks. Starting at the site of the old Surrey Theatre, owned by Thomas Youdan, the founder of the Youdan Cup (the first football cup competition in the world), the walk will conclude at the café at Freeman College, the former home of Lockwood Brothers, the oldest ‘works team’ in the world.

The tour will visit important landmarks and ‘hidden places’ steeped in heritage and hear stories about the early pioneers of the global game. During the walk you will hear stories about the FIFA recognised oldest club in the world, Sheffield FC, and Hallam FC’s Sandygate, the oldest ground in the world, along with the first rules of modern football. You will also hear about recent discoveries of forgotten Sheffield clubs and tactical innovation, from the 180 clubs that we now know were playing in Sheffield between 1857 and 1875 along with more than 41 others ‘firsts’ in the history of the game”.

No other city in the UK can claim such history as Sheffield and we’re hoping people will support these new walks and join our campaign to establish a football heritage museum in our city alongside this programme of education about our unique history and heritage. The walk has moderate inclines but should be accessible to most. Toilet stops with accessible toilets are available, if needed, and refreshments can be purchased at the end.

The next football walk is on Sunday May 12th at 11.00am and on Saturday June 15th at 1.00pm. More are currently being organised. Tickets for the Sheffield Home of Football Guided Walks are £5.00.
