Guided Football History Walks
Sheffield Home of Football is offering four guided football history walks in 2026, the Historical City Centre Walk; a revised Lost Grounds and Youdan Cup walk; the new Porterbrook’s Football History walk; and the new Penistone Football Trail walk. Each walk lasts approximately 90 minutes and is around 2.5 miles on reasonable terrain.
The 2026 Walks have been redesigned by SHOF’s Guides and SHOF’s Trustee Historians, including historian and author John Stocks [a recognised author covering the history of Sheffield], football historian and documentary maker Steve Wood , [the creator of the ‘Real History of Football’ and ‘First City of Football’ video series], and Kevin Neill , sports historian and author [and former Head of Sixth Form at Penistone Grammar].
Sheffield’s contribution to the origins of the modern football game must be seen and heard and in this enlightening series of guided football walks you will discover the locations, people and stories that demonstrate the unique heritage of Sheffield’s footballing history.
At SHOF we believe that no other City in the UK (nor The World) can claim such footballing history and influence on the modern football game that is now played and supported around the World.

As a bonus, each walk can now offer ‘EXTRA TIME’ which will be optional, and you can decide on the day of the walk. This extra time of up to 30 minutes, will enable those attending the walks to take in even more and get to some places that we couldn’t include in the 90 minutes. For example, Blue Plaques that are just off the route of the walk.

SHOF have four different walks that we will be delivering in 2026, starting in March and running all the way through to November. There are 28 walks scheduled during this time, mostly delivered on Saturdays and mostly starting at 11am.
You can get a SHOF Guided Walk Voucher via Eventbrite and then to redeem the voucher the ‘lucky ticket holder’ simply contacts the SHOF Walks Team to actually book onto the walk of their choosing up to 24 hours before the scheduled start of the walk.

Looking for something to do with your relatives or work colleagues as a bit of a ‘team build’?
Sheffield Home of Football is now offering PRIVATE Guided Football Walks covering our Sheffield based walks.
SHOF have three different walks that are based in Sheffield which we will be delivering in 2026, starting in March and running all the way through to November. We can adapt these walks to suit your needs e.g. shorter/longer; different start/end point; lunch ime/after work; up to 10/more than 10 attendees; built in quiz. For a group up to 10 attendees we typically ask for a donation of £50.

The SHEFFIELD CRUCIBLE THEATRE presented ‘The Ladies Football Club‘ through March 2026 and to support this Sheffield Home of Football ran some Free Guided Walks in the City Centre. These walks included some of the historic locations, people and events that make Sheffield the Home of Football, with a unique focus on the involvement of Sheffield’s women in each of these.
